Overview
Updating a 1990s oak kitchen or rethinking a 1970s galley in Lemoore? See what each era needs, how scope moves the range, and when the city’s Building Division gets involved.
The cabinet doors have yellowed, the tile counter has grout lines you can’t get clean, and there’s nowhere to set down groceries. If that sounds like your kitchen, it fits the pattern in Lemoore, where about 4 in 10 homes were built in the 1990s and 2000s. Here’s how to think through a kitchen in this city, from a light refresh to a new layout.
Kitchens by decade in this part of Kings County
1990s tract kitchens
Census estimates make the 1990s the city’s largest building decade, at about 21 percent of homes. Kitchens from those years usually have oak cabinets, tile or laminate counters and a vinyl or tile floor, arranged around a peninsula or small island. If the cabinet boxes are still solid and square, refacing or painting is worth pricing against new cabinets.
2000s kitchens with granite
The 2000s added roughly 19 percent of homes. Those kitchens tend to pair granite counters and a tile backsplash with maple or cherry cabinets, and many are reaching their first full remodel. Typical complaints are dated stone, worn cabinet finishes and lighting that leaves the counters in shadow.
1960s and 1970s galley kitchens
Another 28 percent or so of the city’s homes date from the 1960s and 1970s. Their kitchens are usually closed or galley layouts with soffits above the uppers, sometimes with original wiring and supply lines behind the walls. Any home built before 1978 falls under federal lead-safe rules once painted surfaces are disturbed, which shapes how demolition and cleanup are planned.
Three levels of kitchen work
Whether you want a partial, mid-range or full remodel is one estimator question, and that answer moves the range more than almost any other. Here’s what each level usually includes.
Refresh: keep the layout and cabinet boxes, then update counters, paint or reface the doors, change hardware and replace the sink and faucet. Our kitchen refresh page covers this level.
Mid-range: new cabinets and quartz counters in the same footprint, new flooring, and new light fixtures on existing circuits.
Full remodel: a new layout or island and upgraded selections throughout. Plumbing moves and new circuits involve licensed plumbing and electrical trades and are evaluated during the in-home consultation.
As a planning guide, kitchen projects typically start around $25,000 and a typical remodel lands near $40,000. Full layout changes with premium cabinets and stone can reach $50,000 to $60,000, and cabinets are usually one of the largest line items at any level.
Choices that move the number
Cabinets come first. If the boxes are sound and the layout works, compare refacing with replacement before deciding; our reface vs replace guide lays out the tradeoffs. For counters, the estimator lets you keep what you have, choose new quartz or price premium stone.
Layout is the third lever. Keeping the sink, range and refrigerator where they are keeps scope contained, while opening a galley to the family room raises questions about the wall itself. A wall that may be load-bearing is an engineering question, so that conversation happens in person during the consultation.
Lighting is the quiet fourth lever. Swapping fixtures on existing circuits is fixture-level work, while adding recessed or under-cabinet lighting on new circuits involves a licensed electrician and is reviewed at the consultation. Our kitchen lighting plan guide explains how task and ambient light work together.
Flooring has a catch if you keep the cabinets. A new floor that is thicker than the old vinyl can trap the dishwasher under the counter, so floor height gets measured before anything is ordered, and our kitchen flooring page compares the common options.
Soft water, sun and finishes
The City of Lemoore’s 2025 water quality report lists average hardness of about 3 parts per million, at the very soft end of the U.S. Geological Survey’s scale. In practice that means less mineral scale on aerators and dishwasher racks than in hard-water towns, so dark or matte faucet finishes that show spots elsewhere are easier to live with here.
Sun is the other local factor. A kitchen with a west-facing window can fade cabinet finishes and heat up a counter by late afternoon, and our guide to materials that hold up in Central Valley heat covers which surfaces handle it.
When a permit comes into play
Kitchen work inside city limits is permitted through the City of Lemoore Building Division, which moved permits and plan submissions to a paperless online portal in April 2025. Moving a sink, adding outlets or changing walls are the kinds of changes that usually bring a permit into the picture, while a straight counter swap may not. Your specific permit needs are confirmed during the in-home consultation, and homes outside city limits fall under Kings County.
Getting your planning range
The kitchen estimator asks about size, scope, cabinets, counters, flooring, layout, plumbing and electrical needs, and finish level. When you finish, a personalized planning range appears on screen with photos and a short video, and you can book a free in-home consultation if the number fits. From our shop in southeast Fresno, the drive to Lemoore is about 45 minutes.

What affects the investment
Scope, layout, selections, and existing conditions.
The range for a kitchen depends on how much of the room changes: whether the layout stays or moves, the cabinetry and countertop selections, flooring and lighting, and the condition of what is behind the walls today. Most kitchen projects start around $25,000, a typical remodel lands around $40,000, and larger kitchens with layout changes or premium selections run $50,000 to $60,000. Your estimated range gives you a planning starting point before we confirm details in person.
