Overview
From unused garden tubs in 2000s primary baths to original 1970s hall baths, here is how we plan Chowchilla bathroom remodels and what moves the range.
Some Chowchilla bathrooms are worn out, and some are simply laid out wrong: a primary suite with a soaking tub that never gets used and a shower too tight to turn around in, or a hall bath with original tile and a fan that barely moves air. The plan starts with what the room actually needs.
Primary baths from the 2000s
About a quarter of the homes in town were built in the 2000s, according to Census estimates, the decade when large primary baths with garden tubs were common in new construction. Many of those tubs now go unused, and their space could hold a larger walk-in shower, a second sink, or more storage. If the tub sits on a raised platform with steps, removing it frees even more floor for a bench or a wider shower.
A new walk-in shower with a waterproofed tile base, or a freestanding tub if you still want to soak, are both options in the estimator. If the vanity is long but offers little drawer space, a new one with drawers and a quartz top adds storage without moving plumbing. Builder-grade primary baths often light a wide mirror with a single strip fixture, and sconces at face height on each side give more even light; any new circuit for them is evaluated in person.
When a builder-grade shower fails
Signs that a 2000s shower pan or stall is failing include loose tile or caulk at the curb, grout that stays dark near the drain, and a musty smell that cleaning doesn’t fix. Replacing the pan means rebuilding the shower floor and its waterproofing, not just regrouting. The shower tile and waterproofing page explains how a new one is built.
Moving the toilet or the shower drain is a bigger change than keeping fixtures where they are. The estimator’s layout question covers keeping the layout, minor changes, and major changes, and anything that relocates plumbing is evaluated in person and handled by licensed plumbing trades.
Hall baths from earlier decades
The 1970s added about one in five of today’s homes, and their hall baths usually have tile walls around a tub-shower combination, a short vanity, and little storage. These houses predate 1978, so lead-safe work rules apply to painted walls and trim, and tile walls of that age can hide water damage that only shows during demolition.
If the tub is the only one in the house, a full remodel can keep it with new tile and fixtures; if nobody uses it, a shower conversion is worth comparing. The tub-to-shower versus full remodel guide and our hall and guest bathroom page lay out the tradeoffs. For a bath shared by kids or guests, a tub with a tiled surround and a durable porcelain floor is a practical setup.
The oldest homes, about 13% built before 1950, may still have galvanized supply lines that restrict flow to the shower. Replacing that piping is a licensed plumbing job, evaluated during the consultation.
Ventilation and well water
Chowchilla’s water comes entirely from groundwater wells, and dissolved minerals in well water can spot glass and scale shower heads. Protective glass coatings, finishes that hide water marks, and fixtures that are easy to descale keep daily upkeep down, and large-format porcelain on the floor means fewer grout lines to scrub.
Moisture is the other half. A bathroom that relies on a window or an undersized fan stays damp long after a shower. Swapping a fan on an existing circuit is fixture-level work, while a new circuit or duct route is evaluated in person and handled by licensed trades.
Sizes and scopes in the estimator
The bathroom estimator starts with size: small is roughly 35 to 50 square feet, medium about 50 to 80, and large or primary about 80 to 150 square feet or more. It then asks about scope, shower or tub, tile, vanity, layout, plumbing and electrical, finish level, and glass, and frameless glass gets its own question because it changes both the look and the range.
A partial hall bath update and a full primary suite sit at very different points in our planning bands. Projects generally start around $15,000, typical bathroom remodels settle near $25,000, and primary suites with layout changes or premium finishes climb to $30,000 to $40,000. The range is for planning, and the price is set after the consultation.
Permits and the drive from Fresno
Bathroom permits go through the City of Chowchilla’s Community & Economic Development Department inside city limits, and through the Madera County Building Division in unincorporated areas. What applies to your project is confirmed during the in-home consultation.
Our shop is about 50 minutes away in Fresno, with no office in town. Once the estimator confirms your ZIP code, consultations are scheduled Monday through Saturday, and if you are planning a kitchen as well, it runs through its own estimator separately. If you would rather talk it through first, call (559) 269-0376 during our Monday through Saturday hours.

What affects the investment
Scope, layout, selections, and existing conditions.
The range for a bathroom depends on the scope, the fixtures and materials you choose, whether the layout changes, and the condition of what is behind the walls and under the floor today. Most bathroom projects start around $15,000, a typical remodel lands around $25,000, and larger bathrooms or primary suites run $30,000 to $40,000. Your estimated range gives you a planning starting point before we confirm details in person.
