Overview
Kitchen remodeling for Dinuba’s 1960s and 1970s ranch kitchens, 1990s oak-and-laminate kitchens, and newer builder-grade kitchens ready for an upgrade.
Counter space that runs out the moment two people start cooking, a soffit that steals the top foot of every wall cabinet, a fluorescent box light that hums. If your Dinuba home was built in the 1960s or 1970s, that probably sounds familiar. This page walks through how kitchens from each era of the city’s housing tend to be remodeled, what drives the budget, and what to know about permits and scheduling.
The ranch-era kitchen
About 3 in 10 Dinuba homes were built in the 1960s or 1970s, according to Census estimates, more than any other pair of decades. Galleys and closed rooms were common then, and many still have the original soffits, short upper cabinets, and a single ceiling fixture. Remodels usually aim at storage and light first: full-height cabinets where the soffit turns out to be empty, under-cabinet lighting on existing circuits, and a better work triangle within the same walls.
Nearly all of those houses predate 1978, so the EPA’s lead-safe practices apply when demolition disturbs painted surfaces. That affects how the work area is sealed and cleaned, and it is part of planning from the start.
Older wiring and plumbing
About 11% of homes here were built before 1950, and some mid-century houses may still have original wiring or galvanized supply lines. Kitchens put more demand on circuits than they did then, with a dishwasher, microwave, and other appliances running at once. Adding circuits, changing a panel, or replacing supply piping involves licensed electrical and plumbing trades we coordinate, and that work is evaluated during the consultation, since it affects both scope and the planning range.
After 1980: two kinds of kitchen
Homes built after 1980 make up about half of the city’s total. Their kitchens split into two groups, and each tends to need a different kind of update.
Laminate and oak from the 1980s and 1990s
Another quarter of the city’s homes date from those decades, and their kitchens tend to have oak cabinets, laminate or tile counters, sheet vinyl or tile floors, and builder-grade lighting. Where the layout works, new counters, a tile backsplash, new kitchen flooring, and refaced or painted cabinets can change the room without moving anything.
Newer kitchens, builder-grade finishes
The 2010s added roughly 1 in 7 of the city’s homes. Those kitchens usually function, but many were finished at builder grade, with basic cabinet boxes, entry-level counters, and minimal lighting. Upgrades tend to be selective: better counters, added pantry storage, or new lighting and fixtures.
Counter, cabinet, and budget choices
Counter choices in the estimator
For countertops, the estimator gives three paths: keep what you have, new quartz, or premium stone. Quartz is consistent in color and does not need sealing, while natural stone varies from slab to slab and some types need periodic sealing. In a 1970s or 1990s kitchen, the old counters seldom outlast new cabinets, so most remodels that replace one replace both. Edge profile, sink style, and backsplash height get settled when the counters are selected.
Where kitchen budgets go
With cabinets usually among the largest line items, the estimator asks whether you want to keep, reface, replace, or go premium or custom. Our kitchen cabinet cost guide compares stock, semi-custom, and custom. Counters, flooring, layout changes, plumbing and electrical needs, and finish level all move the number too.
As planning bands, most kitchen projects we take on start around $25,000, a typical kitchen remodel lands around $40,000, and full layout changes or premium selections run $50,000 to $60,000. A personalized range, not a quote, comes from the kitchen estimator.
Layout changes and what they involve
Layout is its own question in the estimator: keep it, make minor changes, or make major ones. Minor changes, like rearranging upper cabinets, adding a pantry cabinet, or adding a peninsula without plumbing, are usually straightforward. Relocating the sink or range, or changing a wall, involves licensed plumbing, electrical, or mechanical trades and sometimes engineering, and it is evaluated at the in-home consultation before it goes into the plan.
Order of work and inspections
A remodel usually runs from demolition to any rough-in by licensed trades, then inspection if the work is permitted, cabinets, countertop templating and installation, backsplash, fixtures, and a final walkthrough. Dinuba’s Building Division asks for inspection requests by phone at least a day before they are needed, so the schedule builds in that lead time. Waiting on special-order cabinets or counter fabrication is a common reason a calendar stretches.
Permit office and travel time
Permit questions for a kitchen inside city limits go to the City of Dinuba Building Division on E. Kamm Ave, and the consultation confirms whether your project needs one. Our Fresno shop at 4143 E Madison Ave is about 40 minutes away, and there is no office in Dinuba.
We schedule visits Monday through Saturday, and your estimator ZIP code confirms coverage. Wondering how long the kitchen will be out of use? Our kitchen remodel timeline guide explains what affects it.

What affects the investment
Scope, layout, selections, and existing conditions.
The range for a kitchen depends on how much of the room changes: whether the layout stays or moves, the cabinetry and countertop selections, flooring and lighting, and the condition of what is behind the walls today. Most kitchen projects start around $25,000, a typical remodel lands around $40,000, and larger kitchens with layout changes or premium selections run $50,000 to $60,000. Your estimated range gives you a planning starting point before we confirm details in person.
